Chapter Thirteen

I peeled my eyes open to see a fiery orange sky. So pretty.

Then I was hit with a wave of agonising pain shooting through the length of my arm, and suddenly all the memories came flooding back. My entire arm was stiff with dried blood. While the pain was still intense, it paled in comparison to the torment of that last tooth being pulled free.

‘Good morning,’ came a soft voice from above. I peered up to see Sylas’s face slide into view. I shot up, much too quickly and stars danced around me. I blinked hard.

‘Woah, woah, steady. No fast movements for a while,’ Sylas instructed, placing two sturdy hands on either side of my shoulders to anchor me. I waited with my eyes pressed shut for the world to stop spinning until I finally re-opened them - to see Sylas grinning broadly.

‘Why, you little shit,’ I raged suddenly. ‘You didn’t bloody listen when I told you not to go near that damn lake and then you lied during your countdown, and you yanked the tooth out before getting to one,’ I shouted in his face. He blinked, and then his lips curled downwards as he battled a smile.

I huffed. ‘What’s so funny?’

‘I’m sorry, I’m not laughing. I am actually so angry with myself for putting you in this position and I will never forgive myself. It’s just that, I’m happy to see you are alive enough to be mad at me.’

I frowned and his smile eventually dropped.

‘I am really sorry, Aurora. I am such an idiot for not listening to you. And when you were pulling out the teeth from your arm last night, all I could think was… I deserved that pain, not you. I would have done anything I could to take it from you.’

I didn’t know what to say to this very vulnerable confession. I left the silence hanging between us, my gaze dropping to my lap. I eventually sighed, fixing him with an unimpressed expression.

‘You look like you really want to kiss me right now,’ Sylas said solemnly, though his eyes glimmered with mischief. I rolled my eyes and unsteadily got to my feet. Glancing down, I noticed he’d made a makeshift bandage from the hem of his shirt, binding it tightly around my arm to stop the bleeding. The fabric crackled with dried blood.

I rubbed my hands roughly over my face. ‘We should probably get some distance covered today. Make up for all the times we have been captured or injured. How’s your wrist?’

Sylas showed me his wrist, no longer bound in the sticks, and flexed it to show it had healed. He helped me mount Lumen, which took a lot of effort on Sylas’s end and swearing on mine. I rummaged in the pack and found the Desire Compass, the desire needle instructed us to head north-west from here.
